SANDOW
IN LOS ANGELES
Photographed
during a tour through California in 1894 by master photographer George Steckel.
His photographic studio was located at 220 South Spring
Street in downtown Los Angeles. Inspired by classic Baroque painting, Steckel experimented contrasts and texture on his subjects to add drama. Sandow was the perfect subject for Steckel and his studies of light and shadow on the human form.
