Photographed
with his chest fully expanded. The image below is slightly out
of focus due to the Victorian camera having to keep the lens open
for several minutes to get enough light into the box to expose
the film. In a pose like this, Sandow would have had to hold his
breath and stay still for the few minutes of the exposure. A very
difficult effort, even for him. In Victorian-era photographs,
many action scenes, or even studio images, especially of that
of small children, will have a blur because of movement.
The
illustration below is from an Austrailian newspaper from 1903,
when Sandow visited that country.
