Sandow in Australia
and New Zealand

Sandow - In 1902, at 35 years of age, Sandow toured Australia. The photograph below was made by D. Bernard at the Swiss Studios in Melbourne. This was considered to be the peak of his condition and muscularity. He went to New Zealand in the summer of 1902-1903.

Sandow was seen in a series of motion pictures that were screened when movies first came to Auckland, New Zealand in late 1896. Before the public got to see him in person, he was already a celebrity and drew large crowds. There were also Sandow physical culture schools in New Zealand before his visit. These only grew in popularity after he toured the country...in fact, aspects of his system of physical culture were later incorporated into that countries physical education program in the schools.

In another dramatic pose by Bernard of Melbourne, wears a Hercules costume of leopard skin and pulling on a rope. Your imagination can only guess at what kind of animal must be on the other end!
