LAUNCESTON
ELLIOTT
At
the age of 22 in 1896, Elliott was the sole member of the
British weightlifting team at the first Olympic games of the
modern era. Elliott won the gold medal for the one-handed
weightlifting event. Thought to be thoroughly English and
an aristocrat by birth, his mother was actually Scottish and
he was born in the colony of India.
Elliott
d isplays his fine physique about 1910
on a nickelodeon card.
Nickelodeons
were the Victorian equal to our "video arcades" of today.
For a penny or a nickel, you could play various machines which
could play music on a piano, tell your fortune, or dispense
a trading card like this one.
