Sandow
in images by the New York photographer Benjamin J. Falk (1853-1925).
Falk often experimented with lighting using Sandow's physique
as the perfect vehicle for shadow and light, and discovered,
much as Italian Baroque painters did in the 1600's, that certain
lighting effects allowed images to appear far more dramatic
and fascinating. Falk photographed many famous
people of the era, including many Metropolitan Opera Stars.
Sandow was in good company. Most of these photographs were
taken in the 1890's.
