EUGEN SANDOW ON FILM

The movie clip (above in animated gif format) shows a few moments of motion picture footage from a film made by W.K.L.Dickson at Thomas Edison's Black Maria Studio in East Orange, New Jersey. It shows Sandow performing one of his "muscle display performances". Watch the first few seconds VERY carefully as Sandow places his arms behind his and you will see his skill and control in making his biceps "dance". This film is believed to have been made on March 6, 1894, the date on the film seems to be a copyright date at a later time. The strip takes a few minutes to load completely on slower connection speeds , so please be patient.

The original print of this film is at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in California. There have been 3 negatives made from it. One is held at the Academy, one was given to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and the last is held by the "Silent Majority", a film preservation and historic society. It is presented here for your enjoyment over 100 years after it was made. To the right, you may view a higher resolution version in 3 different formats.
